Have you ever left the room while dinner’s cooking on the stove? What about a candle burning in your bedroom? How many of you have turned on a space heater and forgotten to switch it off? One small spark can quickly escalate into a dangerous situation. If a fire occurs in your home, are you prepared?
This National Fire Prevention Week, we hope you’ll make a commitment to keeping your family safe with these simple steps from InsideCTEH:
- Install and maintain smoke alarms: According to the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA), three out of five deaths occur in a home with no smoke alarms or no working smoke alarms. The NFPA recommends installing smoke alarms inside bedrooms, outside sleeping areas and on every floor of the house, including basements. Smoke alarms should be tested every month, and batteries should be replaced when needed. Remember, smoke alarms can save your life!
- Know your escape plan: Every family should have a fire escape plan and practice it twice a year at different times of the day. Every family member should have two ways to get out of every room and know where to meet once they make it outside. The American Red Cross also encourages families to practice waking up to a smoke alarm, low crawling and finding their designated meeting spot.
Have fire extinguishers on hand: If a fire occurs, your top priority should be getting everyone outside safely. However, you should also know where the nearest fire extinguisher is located. Most people keep at least one in their home and place it under the kitchen sink. Read the instructions carefully so you understand how your fire extinguisher works in case of emergency.
- Stay aware: Stay aware of your surroundings and potential sources of heat in order to prevent home fires. This includes keeping flammable items, such as clothing, away from anything that gets hot; not smoking in bed; keeping matches and lighters out of children’s reach; and always turning off space heaters.
